What you will study
Comprehensive Anatomy and Physiology:
A full and comprehensive course covering everything from connective tissue and muscular system to the anatomy of energetics with the breath and bandha, and how to bring this knowledge into your teaching. This in-depth module will set you apart from many Yoga Teachers as we bring this knowledge out of the Anatomy book into your teaching. We also cover the vitally important concept of the student's individual skeletal differences, understanding when they are feeling tension and when they are feeling compression, and how we can adapt the posture to suit their individual bodies.
We also cover how to work with people with chronic pain using my experience and research from my book 'Breaking the Attention of Pain'.
As a trauma-informed practice we will also cover how the body physically, emotionally and energetically are affected by trauma and stress and how we regulate the nervous system to release trapped stress in the body.
Living a Yogic Lifestyle
At Yoga Shakti School, we believe that being a yoga teacher extends far beyond the classroom. It’s about embodying the principles of yoga in every aspect of your life. A yogic lifestyle is a holistic approach that integrates the physical, mental, and spiritual dimensions of well-being. As a yoga teacher, living this lifestyle not only enhances your personal practice but also enriches the experiences you create for your students.
Here are some key components that we will embrace in our training:
Mindful Movement: Listen to your body’s needs and honour its limitations, fostering a sustainable practice.
Nourishing Your Body: Adopting a balanced and mindful approach to nutrition. A yogic lifestyle encourages you to fuel your body with whole, natural foods that promote vitality and well-being.
Cultivating Inner Peace: Incorporate meditation and mindfulness into your daily routine. Taking time to connect with your inner self fosters a sense of calm, clarity, and presence that translates into your teaching.
Embracing Compassion and Kindness: Live by the principle of ahimsa, or non-violence. Show compassion toward yourself and others, fostering an environment of acceptance and support.
Lifelong Learning Commit: to continuous growth and education. The journey of a yoga teacher is one of exploration and discovery.
Living with Intention: Set clear intentions for your life and your teaching. Reflecting on your values and aspirations, and align your daily actions with these intentions.
The Impact on Your Teaching When you embody a yogic lifestyle, you naturally inspire your students to do the same. Your authenticity and commitment to the principles of yoga create a powerful model for others. Your passion for living a yogic life will shine through in your classes, fostering a deeper connection with your students and encouraging them to explore their own paths.
The History and Philosophy of Yoga and The Role of the Yoga Teacher in the West:
Here we cover the theories behind the roots of Yoga and Patanjali, how Yoga came to the West and what brings people to Yoga. We also look at the concept of working spiritually as part of a cooperative group and our ego-driving modern society. We also discuss the impact of the Yoga Sutras on Yoga and its development and the connection with Yoga and religion.
We will also look at the individual demands of teaching yoga in the West, such as the physical stresses on the body from a predominantly sedentary society due to hours spent seated. And we also cover the evolution of the different styles of yoga, and the impact on our practice.
We will also look at how our teaching must reflect and adapt to our student's needs and be consciously aware of how those needs change as society changes.

Alignment, Adjustments and Working with Chronic Pain and Stress
Safe trauma-informed alignment training is vital for the physical and psychological well-being of our students, so we look in detail at each individual asana and how we can adjust the asana for different levels and requirements of student. Looking at contra-indications to create safe compassionate teaching practices.
The reality of teaching yoga is that the majority of your students will have some degree of past or present injury or trauma history. Therefore part of your training is designated to helping you understand how injuries and trauma leading to chronic pain develops and how you can help your students both physically and mentally to deal with their chronic pain whilst still enjoying the benefits of Yoga.
It is estimated that up to 80 percent of the population will at some stage in their lives suffer from some form of chronic pain or trauma. These students need your help to bring back strength and flexibility and to re-connect with their bodies. As the author of Breaking the Attachment to Pain, I will help you feel confident to deal with all student's levels. We also look in detail at the importance of props in our practice. And how and when to safely use hands on adjustments and the appropriate vocabulary to help heal.
Breath work: Pranayama
Trauma, injury and stress can significantly affect our bodies, particularly our breathing patterns. When we experience trauma, injury or chronic stress, our natural breath may become shallow, irregular, or even constricted. This disruption can lead to increased anxiety, stress, and a feeling of disconnection from our bodies. Our training emphasises the importance of recognizing these patterns and understanding how they manifest in the physical body.
What You Will Learn: - The Science of Trauma: Understand how trauma affects the body and mind, particularly in relation to breathing patterns.
Pranayama Techniques: Discover various pranayama practices that help reduce stress, promote relaxation, and support emotional regulation.
Creating Safe Spaces: Learn how to create a trauma-informed environment in your classes, where students feel safe to explore their breath and body.
Mindful Movement: Integrate gentle yoga asanas with breathing techniques to enhance the healing process and encourage self-awareness.
Meditation and Concentration
Discover the Healing Power of Meditation in Your Yoga Practice: In this module and in our practice we emphasise the transformative role of meditation in promoting healing and reducing stress. As a yoga instructor, imparting the knowledge of meditation to your students is essential for fostering resilience and well-being in their lives.
Meditation is not just a practice; it’s a powerful tool for self-discovery and emotional regulation. By teaching your students how to cultivate mindfulness and inner peace, you empower them to navigate life’s challenges with greater ease.
Our training provides you with the techniques to guide your students through various meditation practices, helping them tap into their innate ability to heal and restore balance. Understanding the science behind meditation’s effects on the mind and body is crucial in today’s fast-paced world. Research shows that regular meditation reduces stress, enhances focus, and improves emotional health. By incorporating these practices into your classes, you create a sanctuary where your students can find solace and rejuvenation.
Pregnancy and Contra Indications:
Yoga is for everyone, and illness, chronic pain and pregnancy should not exclude people from gaining the enormous benefits from the practice. Many 200hrs Yoga Teacher Training courses do not cover this area and therefore leave new Yoga Teacher Teachers unprepared for the vastness of students demands and levels. As an experienced and qualified Yoga Elder and Author of Breaking the Attachment to Pain I am passionate about this subject, and have spent many years helping people feel confident in the healing practices of Yoga. This module will give you the skills to create a safe yoga teaching environment for all levels of students.
Psychology of Teaching and Learning Types.
Here we look at the role of the teacher and how to work with the often complex demands of the student. We delve deep into the psychology of teaching and learning, equipping you with the skills to create a safe and supportive environment for all students.
Understanding the diverse learning types is essential for effective instruction, especially for those who have experienced trauma or chronic stress. Our program emphasizes the importance of recognising individual needs and fostering resilience through mindful practices.
You'll explore how different teaching techniques resonate with various learners, enhancing their experience and promoting healing and empowering your students to connect with their bodies and minds in a nurturing space.
Professional Development and Marketing:
Our final module looks at the business of yoga teaching and helps new teachers understand the requirements around insurance, intake protocol, social media, data protection and heart-centred business development. Bring all that you have learned into a successful and authentic business.
