What is Shakti Energy – The nature of sexual and creative energy
Shakti means power, energy, or force. Mythologically, Shakti is always described as feminine, often personified as the goddess, Devi, the divine feminine consort of the divine masculine god Shiva. But at the deepest level, Shakti transcends gender.
Metaphysically, in Indian tradition, Shakti is the name given to the fundamental creative dynamism that gives rise to universes. She is considered the source of both matter and physical energy, as well as of just about everything else.
Shakti is the life force energy that makes the cycles of Nature flow just as she powers your breath, makes your heartbeat, and fires your sexual energy. She is often equated with prana (the force within the breath), but she is also the subtle energy that gives rise to prana. She governs us, we do not control her. But we can learn to embrace her.
In essence, yoga teaches that Shakti is the energy within everything. And yet, there’s an aspect of Shakti that remains hidden until it is awakened through yoga, pranayama, meditation, or some other means.
This aspect of Shakti—sometimes called Antar Shakti (literally, inner Shakti, meaning the aspect of Shakti that specifically opens up the inner world of meditation), Yoga Shakti (because she unfolds the state of union, or yoga, between body, mind, and spirit), is the secret force that evolves your consciousness and opens the doorways into your soul.
According to the tantric and yogic teachings, there are seven major energy centres or chakras within our being. Each of them is a vortex of our Shakti energy and gives us access to various elements of life. Sexual energy originates from the root chakra in its crudest form. With in-depth Yoga study, one can learn to bring it harmoniously towards the second chakra, which will then fuel the artistic mind with fantasy, inspiration, and creativity.
Sexual energy, or ojas shakti (‘life power’ in Sanskrit), as it is observed within Tantra, is something that generally exists within our being in a raw form.
This spark of creativity is actually sexual energy being moved from the first chakra to the second chakra. At this new level, the energy becomes more inflated and dynamic. Since creativity and the artistic mind are also located in the second chakra, energetically speaking, these phenomena become more powerful as well.
Once your inner Shakti has revealed herself—and most of us sense Shakti for the first time during asana or meditation—she will literally empower any practice, and lend it power. That means any practice—asana, meditation, a creative project, your sexual relationship, or self-love. That’s when spiritual and creative growth accelerates exponentially. And that’s why learning to tune into your own Shakti is so life-changing.
